Introduction to Knee

Physical Therapy in Austin for Knee

Welcome to Carter Physiotherapy's patient resource about knee problems.

Knee Anatomy (General)The knee is a sensitive area of the body and one that can be injured doing almost any activity.  The knee is normally exposed and vulnerable and a simple twist can lead to a serious injury as well as ongoing problems and a long recovery time.  Therefore, whether your sport is rugby or racquetball, bowling or badminton, you cannot take chances with this body part.

This section of our site has everything you need to know about preventing or correcting a knee injury.  It is our goal to provide you with resources, exercises and other knee related information that will allow you to learn about how easily this sensitive area can be injured.

When you take the necessary steps in preventing an injury, you will enjoy your chosen sport more and avoid Physical Therapy and other painful and time consuming tasks that come with nursing a knee injury.

I had been to Carter Physiotherapy 5 or more years ago, so when my knee began causing problems, and my doctor recommended PT, I knew where I would go. One on one treatment, manual therapy, an hour of focused attention by bright, capable therapists is the best approach to recovery. I am so grateful for restored mobility and strength in my knee! Thank you Hesper and Nick for your excellent care.

I love these guys! I’m a therapist and that job requires a lot of sitting which, if you read Jarod’s article in Austin Fit, you know is never a good thing. After a really busy time I ended up with back, hip, knee and foot pain. Jarod and Ben got me functioning again and back to comfort. They have different but complimentary styles. They care about their patients and they know what they’re doing. Really five stars aren’t enough!

Ben has been my physical therapist for years. He had helped me over come various issues that have come up: bursitis, knee pain, back and neck pain following a car accident. He offers a seamless combination of evidence based practice and holistic treatment to result in outstanding outcomes. After one needling session I had increased my neck mobility by tenfold. His tissue work and exercise programs are also unbeatable. I addition to being an amazing therapist, he is also an all around great guy. He’s hilarious and will keep a positive energy flowing throughout your sessions.  He’s super thorough and will really listen to you. I can’t say enough good things! If you want quality care, to to Ben!

Jarod’s knowledge of the musculoskeletal system and how to fix functional impairments with manual therapy are the best I have seen.  As an Osteopathic Physician, I have worked with people who have devoted their lives to healing people with their hands.  Jarod is one of those people and his skills work.  The first time Jarod treated me was for a knee injury I sustained following a half marathon.  I struggled with trying to rehab my knee on my own without success.  Jarod was able to get me back on Town Lake trail painfree in 1 week.  I would recommend this guy to anyone with musculoskeletal injury and I will gladly refer my patient’s to him.

I have been a patient of Jarod's for over a decade. He is a skilled manual therapist, friendly, compassionate and an all around nice guy. Knees, shoulders and back issues, Jarod has fixed what ailed me every time. I recently had an opportunity to work with Nick and I could not be more satisfied with the experience. Nick is very skilled manual therapist and it's clear that he cares about his patients. My sessions with him were very productive and I was very satisfied with the outcome. I highly reccomend Jarod and his team for any physical therapy services you may need. Mark

After going to a Physical Therapist that left me feeling like the therapies were not specific enough to me and my injury, a friend of mine (a licensed Physical Therapist from another city) recommended I go to Carter Physiotherapy. My first visit with Nick Biederwolf was leaps and bounds better than my previous experiences with the previous physical therapist. After a comprehensive inspection and careful manipulations, Nick developed a treatment specific to my needs. Using dry needling and manual therapy/massage, my knee tendon injury improved to almost 100% after four visits. Not only did Nick treat my injury well, he also quelled my fear of needles with great conversation and a calm demeanor. I'm incredibly happy with the results and will happily return if I become injured in the future.

My whole experience going here has just been great. The discovery session was incredible, let alone that they offer it for free! I went in for two sessions before running the upcoming 3M Half Marathon due to knee pain. Without going here, I probably would not be able to run it. Ben really took the time to understand my goals and get to know the big picture. They don't take insurance so be prepared to pay for each session. Highly recommended for any athlete looking to get back on their feet or bike.

I had a partial tear of my PCL (Posterior Cruciate Ligament) on Feb/Mar 2013. I visited two doctors; The first wasn't even able to diagnose the injury and the second did an MRI and with the results in hands strongly advised me to do a surgery with an estimate recovery time of 6-9 months. I really wanted to avoid it and came across Dr. Carter. At our first appointment he did some tests to check the strength of the knee/leg... Although not 100% sure we would achieve success, he was very confident we could get through it without surgery. As he said, within 2-3 sessions I was already playing soccer at almost 100% with some mild discomfort. As the sessions passed by, we worked on minimizing the discomfort and strength of the muscles around the ligament... Within 45-60 days I was already playing at a very good level and with no discomfort. A considerable gain; from 6-9 months to 45-60 days, despite all the trouble that would come along with a surgery. I am about 15 months past my injury and have no need of surgery. I also had a somewhat tight schedule at the time and with some arrangements from both sides, Dr. Carter was able to always get me in. He never refused to work around his own schedule (30min here and there). Unfortunately, I had to move away from Austin or I strongly believe that 1-2 more sessions would have made my recovery even faster. Thanks Dr. Carter. Andre Siqueira

Our daughter was referred to Carter Physiotherapy by a teammate on her Austin Junior Mizuno Volleyball Team. The team was playing at the USA Nationals and Kathryn was unable to play in the last two matches because her patella tendon was hurting so badly. We needed excellent treatment right away because her high school team camp was approaching, then AJV tryouts, then two-a-days for high school volleyball. She didn't have time to rest her knee. Shortly after treatments began on her knee she was able to participate in the high school camp. During the camp, she hurt her thumb (she's a setter) and had AJV tryouts the following weekend. He continued treating her knee and included thumb treatment. Manual therapy certainly is not for the weak of heart because it hurts!!!! However, all the treatments and pain have paid off because she was able to compete in team camp, made the 17 Mizuno team (top team for age group) and is playing now without her thumb even being taped. Even though she has stopped direct treatment, she continues with the exercises. If the need arises, we will definitely seek his treatment again.
